A week has passed and I am still thinking about, and applying, a lot of the neat tips I learned at ARPM.

Fiona Blayney spoke about business by design. Figure out what you want your business to look like and plan back from that vision. Question everything and let everyone question you.

Natalie Wendell from Wendell Property Management had great success with thinking about her business by design. Natalie redefined her Property Management business by putting her employees first. She fired landlords, gave Property Managers a Monday – Friday work week and made it easier for them to earn great money by modifying – or in some cases eliminating – a commission structure all together. This resulted in a successful growing business and longevity within her team.

Developing high performing teams comes from great leadership and there some valuable lessons from Andy Lark, particularly around accountability. We all crave direction, attention and to know that what we are doing makes a difference to the clients that we serve. The best way to get the best out of your team is to hold them accountable. Set clear goals and expectations and schedule time to have follow up conversations to make sure your team are on track to achieve those goals.

The most successful team of all time, the All Blacks, talk about behaviour first, action second. I loved the Richie McCaw example that he would set behavioural goals for himself every time he ran onto the field. Demonstrate the right behaviour yourself as a leader, your team will follow.

I loved the Work Smarter, Live Better talk by Cyril Peupion. I have already identified my ‘rocks’ (3 biggest priorities) and I’m making those my priority every day. I have even separated by ‘to do’ list into 3 different lists; one for every rock. If a to do item pops up that doesn’t fit under one of my rocks it is moved to the side as it is not a priority and quite possibly a time wasting task. This has already helped me be more efficient and I have more time for the tasks that really matter and helps me move my business forward.

My three rocks are:

  • Deploying our new Console Pay feature which helps agencies reduce the amount of time receipting rent from hours to just 5 minutes per day
  • Promoting our October release of Console Cloud with my team.  We’ve had some great feedback and a lot of demand.  If you want to find out more, please contact me at [email protected]
  • Spending more time with my team and helping them to be more effective Business Managers.  I love developing teams and seeing them succeed and by making this a priority every day, I have already seen some great results

As Andy Lark said, where your attention goes, your energy flows.

What is on your to do list that aligns with your highest priorities? Start with those first.

Looking forward to seeing you at PMC in October!
